All children meet together at 6:15 to greet each other, sing songs and share news.
The children then get divided into groups by age and German speaking ability and meet in different classrooms.
Around 7:05, all children gather again, for birthday celebrations and a departing song.
Young:
Children between the age of 2 and 6 meet together to enjoy the German language by listening to puppets and stories, singing, doing arts and crafts, dancing, reading books, playing games, and more. Lessons are theme based and themes tend to span a few weeks. Parents are expected to stay with their child(ren) to help them with activities and keep them engaged. Those parents, who feel comfortable coming up with a theme and leading a class, are encouraged to do so.
School-age Children:
German is fostered through verbal as well as written communication, games and theater plays. Comprehension as well as production of German is targeted through age-appropriate theme-based activities. Children engage in sharing of personal experiences, reading stories, poems and books, writing, learning and performing plays, doing arts and crafts and playing games. Parents who are not teaching do not need to stay with their children. We will tutor the school age children.
Other Activities:
Approximately once a month, parent volunteers bring our “libraries (books and movies)” (a collection of books and movies for all ages) for families to view and borrow as they like.
In addition, we discuss, prepare for and celebrate cultural events such St. Martinstag, Nikolaustag, Fasching, Easter, German Unification Day and Sommerfest. These cultural events are celebrated together with the Deutsche Schule Ann Arbor, Sanne's GermanWorks, S&L Bauernhof and the surrounding German community.
